    Multigrid solution of the Euler equations on unstructured and adaptive meshes

    A multigrid algorithm has been developed for solving the steady-state Euler equations in two dimensions on unstructured triangular meshes. The method assumes the various coarse and fine grids of the multigrid sequence to be independent of one another, thus decoupling the grid generation procedure from the multigrid algorithm. The transfer of variables between the various meshes employs a tree-search algorithm which rapidly identifies regions of overlap between coarse and fine grid cells. Finer meshes are obtained either by regenerating new globally refined meshes, or by adaptively refining the previous coarser mesh. For both cases, the observed convergence rates are comparable to those obtained with structured multigrid Euler solvers. The adaptively generated meshes are shown to produce solutions of higher accuracy with fewer mesh points

    A high resolution shock capturing scheme for high Mach number internal flow

    An accurate shock capturing scheme is developed for high speed flow. The flux limited dissipation scheme can be converted to a symmetric TVD scheme in the case of a scalar conservation law. Application to an oblique shock wave problem shows the improved resolution and accuracy when compared to the results obtained by the adaptive dissipation method, while exhibiting comparable computational efficiency

    Analysis and design of numerical schemes for gas dynamics. 2: Artificial diffusion and discrete shock structure

    The effect of artificial diffusion on discrete shock structures is examined for a family of schemes which includes scalar diffusion, convective upwind and split pressure (CUSP) schemes, and upwind schemes with characteristics splitting. The analysis leads to conditions on the diffusive flux such that stationary discrete shocks can contain a single interior point. The simplest formulation which meets these conditions is a CUSP scheme in which the coefficients of the pressure differences is fully determined by the coefficient of convective diffusion. It is also shown how both the characteristic and CUSP schemes can be modified to preserve constant stagnation enthalpy in steady flow, leading to four variants, the E and H-characteristic schemes, and the E and H-CUSP schemes. Numerical results are presented which confirm the properties of these schemes

    Multigrid solution of the Navier-Stokes equations on triangular meshes

    A Navier-Stokes algorithm for use on unstructured triangular meshes is presented. Spatial discretization of the governing equations is achieved using a finite element Galerkin approximation, which can be shown to be equivalent to a finite volume approximation for regular equilateral triangular meshes. Integration steady-state is performed using a multistage time-stepping scheme, and convergence is accelerated by means of implicit residual smoothing and an unstructured multigrid algorithm. Directional scaling of the artificial dissipation and the implicit residual smoothing operator is achieved for unstructured meshes by considering local mesh stretching vectors at each point. The accuracy of the scheme for highly stretched triangular meshes is validated by comparing computed flat-plate laminar boundary layer results with the well known similarity solution, and by comparing laminar airfoil results with those obtained from various well-established structured quadrilateral-mesh codes. The convergence efficiency of the present method is also shown to be competitive with those demonstrated by structured quadrilateral-mesh algorithms

    Supersonic wing and wing-body shape optimization using an adjoint formulation

    This paper describes the implementation of optimization techniques based on control theory for wing and wing-body design of supersonic configurations. The work represents an extension of our earlier research in which control theory is used to devise a design procedure that significantly reduces the computational cost by employing an adjoint equation. In previous studies it was shown that control theory could be used to~eviseransonic design methods for airfoils and wings in which the shape and the surrounding body-fitted mesh are both generated analytically, and the control is the mapping function. The method has also been implemented for both transonic potential flows and transonic flows governed by the Euler equations using an alternative formulation which employs numerically generated grids, so that it can treat more general configurations. Here results are presented for three-dimensional design cases subject to supersonic flows governed by the Euler equation

    A comparison of design variables for control theory based airfoil optimization

    This paper describes the implementation of optimization techniques based on control theory for airfoil design. In our previous work in the area it was shown that control theory could be employed to devise effective optimization procedures for two-dimensional profiles by using either the potential flow or the Euler equations with either a conformal mapping or a general coordinate system. We have also explored three-dimensional extensions of these formulations recently. The goal of our present work is to demonstrate the versatility of the control theory approach by designing airfoils using both Hicks-Henne functions and B-spline control points as design variables. The research also demonstrates that the parameterization of the design space is an open question in aerodynamic design

    This paper describes the implementation of optimization techniques based on control theory for airfoil design. In our previous work it was shown that control theory could be employed to devise effective optimization procedures for two-dimensional profiles by using the potential flow equation with either a conformal mapping or a general coordinate system. The goal of our present work is to extend the development to treat the Euler equations in two-dimensions by procedures that can readily be generalized to treat complex shapes in three-dimensions. Therefore, we have developed methods which can address airfoil design through either an analytic mapping or an arbitrary grid perturbation method applied to a finite volume discretization of the Euler equations. Here the control law serves to provide computationally inexpensive gradient information to a standard numerical optimization method. Results are presented for both the inverse problem and drag minimization problem
